Behind the decorated organ case, the tower organ, containing the great, swell, choir, solo and pedal divisions, accompanies the congregation in its music for worship and plays the full range of organ repertoire with uncompromised majesty and subtlety. The Chancel organ with two manual divisions and pedal was designed with the accompaniment of choirs and small ensembles of singers and instrumentalists in mind.
The singing tower is the acoustical centre of the organ, providing acoustic treatment to the raw sound from the wind chest. The great, swell, choir and bass divisions of the large organ occupy the large nave and the organist's seat sits comfortably in a raised gallery at the western end of the organ. The great swell is the largest of the three divisions in the tower organ and the tonal range of any pipe in the great swell is fully three octaves. There are 828 pipes in the great, swell. In order to blend the sound from these pipes the sound is broadcast through 32 speakers positioned at each of eight levels. The large swell pipes which lie 8 feet (2.5 metres) below the wind chest are simulated by a treble division (tracks 4-8) of the lower manual. The sound is carefully balanced to form a harmonious blend of the pipes from which the great swell division is derived.
The swell sound effect is completed using cabs and tuned pipework, giving the tone-colour of the lower manual pipes reproduced from the top of the swell division, as opposed to the reserved tone-colour of the pipes from the wind chest. The swell division of the great organ includes 32 cylinders arranged in seven groups. Eight of the pipes in the swell organ are equipped with steelyards which when contracted, expand the pipes providing a rich tone variation. These stages can be controlled individually, singly or in unison to marry the swell division to the design of the organ.
The melody lines are not confined to the lines of the lower manual. The melody is contrived in a most interesting way by the use of the pedal system in combination with the swell. The swell is ring modulated through the use of the great pedal stop. Different combinations of keys (pedal combinations) change the timbre of the swell. The swell changes to a very rich, bellow / flute timbre when the pedal is pressed down. d2c66b5586
