The announcement comes days after Val Kilmer announced via Twitter that he'll be reuniting with Kelsey Grammer to star in Gilligan's Island for TV Land's revival this fall. And additional announcements for an August 9th 4K UHD release for Robert De Niro and Al Pacino's 1995 hit film Heat could mean a lot of celebration, too. Directed by Michael Mann and starring Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Willem Dafoe, it's a landmark crime drama about a mob boss, which was shot by cinematographer Michael Ballhaus (who is also one of the newest Hall of Fame inductees to be announced this year) and another film that may be getting a 4K UHD release.
Given that the 1995 release has yet to receive a 4K UHD release in the UK, however, let's take a look at what's available for the original version in Blu-ray, along with what is rumored to be in the new 4K UHD release, and what else is coming out in the way of an official UK release.
The moral of any film should be simple, but Heat manages to be anything but. The film follows Robert De Niro's Captain Jack Furillo as he attempts to take down the Somali mob under the orders of an FBI agent. It's a fairly standard tale of mob domination on the streets to meet the justice system, but it is made so well that it becomes something completely different. Michael Mann never goes for a predictable Hollywood tale. He goes for just enough wholesomeness to trick audiences into believing they are enjoying a good old-fashioned 1950's caper, but he takes it just as far as it needs to go before the true darkness arrives.
I don't know if you've been paying attention, but there's a new wave of interest in 4K at the moment. Especially in light of The Witcher 3 and the fact that there has been some hesitancy to pay for 4K television sets over the past year or so. We're almost there now, and the next iteration of 4K is on its way, and surprisingly enough, it's none other than Heat. Michael Mann's 1995 film is going to be the first major release to upgrade from 1080p to 4K UHD format, and if you haven't seen the film yet, 2015's Heat DVD is still available for purchase. I've been watching the Heat 4K UHD trailer here . What an image. I'm not in the advise of giving away any more details on the film than the video above, but I'll say this, it looks absolutely fantastic. Have you watched the 4K UHD trailer?
