Piazzolla has received many major international awards, including the Grammy and the Prix Benois. He has been a member of the International Tango Association, and was made an honorary member of the Society of the Friends of Tango in New York. He is also a member of the Society of Authors and Composers of America, and has served as president of the Tango Association of New York. He was also a member of the International Composers of the 20th Century.
The next year, he immigrated to New York City, where he joined the American Center of Tango (ACT) as a pianist and composer, an association that continued until his death. Piazzolla's first book, Tango: A New History, was published in 1944, and soon thereafter he had his first international success as a conductor. His next book, which I have not read yet, is a memoir of his musical life in New York.
Piazzolla was born in a small town in Argentina, near the Bolivian border. His father, a lawyer, was an active member of the Italian Communist Party, a party to which his mother belonged. After graduating from high school, Piazzolla went to Buenos Aires, where he made his first musical contacts with tango musicians. He began to compose in his early twenties, took a degree in philosophy at the University of Buenos Aires, and became a member of a Communist-socialist group there. Piazzolla then moved to Paris, where he attended the Paris Conservatoire for one year, and later returned to Argentina. His first tango composition, Apresentacion (Presentation) was performed in 1936 by the pianist Misia, a great friend of his father's.
Piazzolla's music has been performed throughout the world. One of his most well-known pieces, Mambo Italiano, is a tango version of the Cuban dance, the mambo, which he called Italiano. The Inaugural Concert of the Festival of New American Music in Washington D.C.
