Our goal is to understand the individual perceptions of the community regarding StackExchange. Specifically, we aim to identify whether and how the perceptions of the community differ among users of different communities. We plan to follow a two-stage approach: (i) survey an existing StackExchange community (i.e., the Software Engineering StackExchange, which has over 150,000 users) to collect user perceptions of the community and (ii) use the perceptions from (i) to programatically predict the perceptions of the community at a subsequent time (i.e., a time when impressions of the community are not available). In this paper, we describe our approach to (i) and present the results of our pilot study to (ii). To collect data for the pilot, we applied an online survey distributed through the community itself. The survey contained two types of questions, those related to demographics and those related to perceptions of the community. Among the questions of the latter type, the survey collected the following items: (i) user's intentions to remain active in the community; (ii) the extent to which one person influences another's opinion in the community; (iii) the extent to which members of the community form opinions on the merits of community services; (iv) whether community services are worth the effort; (v) whether community services should be changed; (vi) the importance of the reputation system; (vii) the role of social media and discussion forums for the community; and (viii) whether the community is a useful resource. The survey was distributed to community members via email and made its debut in January 2011. The paper focused on the results from the free response questions of the survey. In our analysis, we retrieved the qualitative answers to the questions in order to extract the perception of users of the community. In a second stage, we programmed a system that optimizes the parameters of the linear regression model used to model user perceptions. The main objective was to improve the model's accuracy for the current state of the community, by enriching the dataset used to predict the perceptions of the community. d2c66b5586
