The bass guitar is almost a necessity in a full horn section today. A lot of people think how silly it is to have a part just for one instrument. The truth is that the bass is an extremely versatile part, which can blend right into and add a lot to an orchestra. Accessories to a bass include: pads, strings, pick guards, and more. Also the bass itself includes all sorts of knobs and controls which can be used for flexibility.
As you can see, even though the Double Bass from Vienna Symphonic Library has been designed to be plugged in and used as the Kontakt Instrument, the actual sound is based on a more traditional approach of using a fretted double bass and a string bass tuned to the same note which was the root of the fretboard. This technique allows you to play a lot of the subtleties that aren't possible to do with a fretboard. For example, the articulations provide for up to twelve different notes for every string, whereas on a fretboard you rarely see more than four or five. The cross picking allows you to play multiple notes at once, which is not achievable using frets or a fingerboard. The nibbly pads allow you to play with a bit more substance which could be used for chords, melodies, or basslines. When it comes to the timing, the bass is in perfect time all the way through, including with the tremolos.
There are a few things that you may or not be aware of, for example, there are two kinds of pads included. The first is the fixed one, and the second is the scrolling one. The fixed pads will stay at the same position regardless of how the note is played, so it's the most typical setting. The scrolling pads will shake back and forth as the note is played, and the oscillating index will never by -1 or +1. This gives the different pitches better separation. d2c66b5586
