Stranvaesia davidiana, the Chinese photinia,[1] is a species of shrub grown as an ornamental plant. Its flowers are white and grow in close clusters, followed by small pome fruits. It originated from east Asia and has been introduced to North America as a garden plant. It is sometimes known as Photinia davidiana.
TREES and shrubs with bright, long-lasting berries are indispensable at this time of year. If they also hold their leaves, that is a bonus. And if those leaves (or some of them) turn from green to orange to red as winter advances, then we have something very special indeed. Photinia davidiana is just such a plant.
The specific name davidiana commemorates Armand David, the French missionary who worked in China from 1862 to 1873. He is also famous among zoologists for his discovery of the extremely rare Pere David's deer in the grounds of the Imperial Summer Palace in Peking. 781b155fdc
