I have no recollection of my first majorly-structured bike ride: the local road bike club's 40-mile night ride through the Chi-cago neighborhoods, where the route took us through the 200-square-mile Chicago Park District. I was only 10 or so, but it was a transformative experience; I suddenly came to understand that what I thought about road cycling was wrong. I rode with older guys who were strong and faster and were even able to drop me with a smooth backpedal after hitting the front wheel. Their experience, their distance and their physical fortitude impressed me, and I began to fantasize that my own muscles could do the same. Soon after, I rode a bike for about a year, and I began to enjoy road riding.
In 1993, my road biking ended. I was 12. That's four years of relative inactivity, and my ability to move quickly over rough surfaces, thanks in no small part to my road experience, was gone.
I moved on to mountain biking, and the combination of strong legs, a strong body and a high center of gravity made it possible for me to do well on technical courses, especially on descents.
But I stuck with it, and I stuck to my road bike. It wasn't until four or five years ago that I finally resumed road riding, and my real goal was to achieve a speed that I could always stay with, a rider that didn't get dropped on descents and that would always be able to pass on a downhill.
Over time, I changed my body so that I was more like my road bike friends: lower center of gravity and more efficient use of my major muscle groups, especially my quads. It was a gamble, because a lower center of gravity makes descending much more difficult (I had to learn to descend without falling over). But, if I was getting dropped, I was getting dropped.
I also changed my tire pressures: I would re-inflate my front tire to 32psi, and my back tire to 27psi. At 20psi, I would fly. But only while 0b46394aab
