Burrillville was named for United States senator James Burrill, Jr., who was Rhode Island Attorney General when the town was incorporated in 1806.

Providence is approximately fifty-five miles from Bourne, Massachusetts, the first Cape Cod town that Peter and Lois would pass on the way to their B&B. If we accept that Quahog is slightly to the northwest of Providence, the distance is about right.

Parker took the clam to the Gulf Specimen Marine Lab in Panacea, where researchers confirmed it was much larger than the average quahog, which typically weigh up to half a pound and measure up to 4.3 inches in length. Parker's clam was measured at 6 inches long.

The ocean quahog is a filter-feeding bivalve mollusk that lives in sandy seabeds. It filters organic matter from the water using its siphon. The siphon is often the only visible part of the animal. The rest of it is usually buried beneath the sand on the ocean floor.
The quahog is the typical clam used in clam chowder, along with various other soups, stews, and seafood dishes. This clam is seen as a great choice for cooking since the United States quahog fishery is managed and sustainable. That fishery is located in two regions: Maine and Long Island, New York. The entire native range of the quahog extends from Newfoundland to North Carolina, well north of where Parker found a massive ocean quahog in Florida. How did this mollusk make it so far south It probably has something to do with its age.
Blueline tilefish are relatively long-lived, sedentary, and slow growing, making the species susceptible to overfishing. The South Atlantic Fishery Management Council (SAFMC) manages blueline tilefish in federal waters south of Virginia, but there is currently (as of May 14, 2015) no management of blueline tilefish in Federal waters off the Mid-Atlantic coast. Although Virginia and Maryland have instituted regulations for state waters, catches in any Federal waters north of North Carolina may be landed from Delaware north without restriction.
QPX (Quahog Parasite Unknown), a thraustochytrid, is the source of morbidity and mortality in hard clams, Mercenaria mercenaria along the northeast coast of North America. The QPX organism is a facultative pathogen that results in disease in clams held at high densities and salinities. The disease most commonly causes losses in two-year-old aquacultured clams. In some locations, nodules and swellings containing QPX can be identified in the mantle often in areas adjacent to the siphon. Histologically, the organism is surrounded by thick mucus that inhibits phagocytosis by the clam's inflammatory cells especially during the spring and fall when the clam's immune system is less active. Variability in severity of infection and morbidity has been associated with origin of the brood stock with juvenile clams from southern U.S. brood stock being the most affected. 781b155fdc
